​Hungarians Like to Stay in the Country for Vacation

The number of domestic guest nights increased by 14 percent, and that of international guest nights decreased by 4.1 percent in Hungarian hotels this May comparing to last year’s same period. More and more Hungarians spend summer vacations in the country: the income of the hotels increased by 8 percent and their turnover by 2.9 percent.

Hungarians are more likely to spend vacations in the country: according to the latest statistics 922 thousand domestic guest nights were spent in Hungarian hotels in May 2014, which is 14 percent more than the number of nights of last year’s same period. The number of international guest nights decreased by 4.2 percent. Because of the growing interest the number of guests increased by 13 percent, and the turnover of the Hungarian hotels increased by 2.9 percent in May and by 6.5 percent in the first 5 months of 2014. The hotels’ income increased by 8 percent compared to last year’s same period.

The number of Guests Increased the Most in the Southern Great Plain

The highest increase was noticed in the Southern Great Plain region: 26.7 percent more guest nights were spent in hotels here. The number of guest nights increased in all regions except from the Lake Tisza. Though in Budapest hotels 7 percent less nights were spent, in the Budapest-Middle Danube region an 8 percent increase was noticed. Hotels couldn’t reach such an extraordinary high international guest number like in last May: a total of 1.197 million international guest nights were spent there, which is 4.1 percent less than in last year. Most of the foreign guests came from Germany, Russia and Austria. The number of the tourists from the Czech Republic was 13 percent higher this May.

Foreign Guests Still Prefer Budapest

The most popular Hungarian destination among foreign tourists is Budapest and the Budapest-Middle Danube region. The hotels’ usage rate was 56 percent, which is 2.5 percent higher than in last year’s same period. Five and four-star hotels and spa resorts had the most guests: the usage rates of these were 74, 68 and 67 percent.
